Biography
Marc Desgrandchamps, a leading figure on the French art scene, plays with notions of opacity, transparency and superimposition in his work.
If his painting is figurative, where we recognize bodies and landscapes, the perspective is nevertheless often twisted, the space indefinite, and suddenly anomalies arise: bodies and objects are fragmented. His work references many universes (art history, photography, cinema, literature and music); it raises the question of the medium’ specificities, and experiences the limits of figuration. Another recurrent motif in his artistic practice, the feminine figure, occupies a central place.
Major exhibitions of Marc Desgrandchamps’ work have been held at the Musée d’Art contemporain, Strasbourg (2004); Musée d’Art Contemporain, Lyon (2004); Kunstmuseum, Bonn (2005); MNAM – Centre Georges Pompidou (2006); Musée d’Art modern de la Ville de Paris (2011). In 2023, his work featured in several solo exhibitions, for instance those at the Musée d’Art Contemporain, Marseille; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon; Fondation pour l’Art contemporain Salomon, Annecy; Centre Lee Ufan, Arles.
Desgrandchamps’ work is present in French institutional collections: Frac île-de-France – Le Plateau, Paris; Frac Occitanie – Les Abattoirs, Toulouse; Musée d’Art contemporain, Lyon; Musée d’Art modern et contemporain, les Sables d’Olonne; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Caen; Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain, Strasbourg; Centre national des arts plastiques – CNAP.
